What is eyelid surgery?

Eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty, is performed to correct the appearance of heavy, drooping upper eyelids and dark, puffy bags beneath the eyes that can make people look tired or older than they actually are. The surgery can restore a more youthful, alert appearance by removing excess skin and fat from the eyelids, and can even help improve vision if sagging eyelids interfere with sight—a condition called ptosis. Removing upper eyelid skin without addressing brow position cannot accomplish patient satisfaction in long term. When you come to our office with complaints about upper lid skin excess, we always asses your brow positions. If the drooping of the eyelid goes away when the brows are raised, we show you then a brow lift may be the procedure you are looking for. If you have previously had an upper blepharoplasty but are starting to notice droopiness of the eyelids again, you may be considering undergoing another procedure. Again a brow lift is most probably the correct solution for your problem.

Lower eyelid puffiness is usually due to the sagging and tissue loss in the cheek which is seen to be a continuous unit with lower lid in young individuals. Therefore   fat repositioning from the inside of the lid into creases along the lower border of the periorbital area rather than removing that fat would be the procedure of choice to address periorbital hollowness and puffy lower lid. This technique can be combined with microsurgical fat grafting (lower eyelids) and conventional fat transfer to the upper cheek. If we find lower lid connective tissue weak and inclined to sag, we also lift the outer corner of the eye to a position higher than the inner corner. This gives the eyes a youthful appearance as well as protects against the development of a lower lid deformity called ectropion.

    • Who is a good candidate for eyelid surgery?

Candidates for eyelid surgery are bothered by excess skin, puffy bags, wrinkles, and dark circles under the eyes. We see patients of various ages who have concerns about their eyelids. Older patients generally desire age-related eyelid changes that are a result of normal aging, excessive sun exposure, or smoking. Younger patients often have concerns about inherited eyelid puffiness.

Eyelid surgery is often combined with other facial cosmetic surgery procedures such as brow lifts or facelifts in order to create a youthful balance to the face.
